Meet The Team
Death Care Services Inc. is a small, dedicated team of experienced professionals.
With over 65 years of experience between the four of us, we are good at what we do. That said, none of us could do it alone. We are a tight-knit group of people dedicated to offering Winnipeg the best in care when a loved-one dies.
Shane Neufeld
Owner | General Manager | LE, LFD
Shane started as an apprentice Funeral Director in 1990. During his career he struggled with the direction funeral service was taking and wanted to offer something different. In 2014 he developed a completely new concept in the death care / funeral industry which has resonated very well with the community in Winnipeg.

Shane is married to Christy Neufeld, since 2001 and they have two lovely children, Ella and Brock.
Christy Neufeld
Owner
Christy first started working in funeral service, as a student, at Thomson Funeral Home of Winnipeg in 1996. Shane was a Funeral Director/Embalmer at Thomson's at the time. Soon they began dating and now the two of them parent two children and are highly focused on the business of providing cremation and funeral services to the Winnipeg Community.

FAQs
What do I do when a death occurs?
Call us. 204-691-5408 - anytime of day or night.
We answer the phones directly so you'll never need to speak with an answering service.

From there we'll walk you through the process which varies a little depending on the circumstances surrounding the death. A death at home, for example, is handled differently than a hospital death.
Do you own your own crematorium?
YES. We are in control of every aspect of the process from start to finish. Our crematory provides cremation services to a number of funeral homes in Winnipeg, just like every other crematorium in the area.

Crematory facilities are legislated under the Cemeteries act of Manitoba. Just like cemeteries, all crematoriums must provide service to any licensed funeral home requesting services. Winnipeg has a long history of sharing crematory resources (just like cemeteries) because if we all owned and operated our own facilities, the cost of cremation would be far higher than it is currently. Sharing resources reduces overall costs and is good for the consumer.
Is it necessary to identify the body?
NO. When admitted to a medical facility a person receives an ID band immediately. Medical procedures and medications are administered based on this form of identification.

We are very comfortable with the hospital and nursing home identification procedures and do not require the family to view the body prior to cremation.
Can I scatter the cremated remains?
YES, absolutely. In fact, the Province of Manitoba has issued an official statement in support of the scattering of human cremated remains on provincial crown lands and waterways. CLICK HERE to read the release.

On private property, it is expected that you have the permission of the property owner or that you own the property yourself.

In essence, it is perfectly legal and a little bit of common sense goes a long way.
Do I need to buy an urn?
NO. Urns are optional.
The ashes are returned to us, by the crematory, in a small cardboard container, weighing somewhere between 5 and 10 pounds usually. If scattering is the planned method of disposition, the cardboard container can be recycled afterward.
We do provide urns at a very low retail markup. You have the option of purchasing an urn from us, or you are welcome to purchase it elsewhere and place the ashes into it on your own or request that we do so for you.
How long does cremation take?
The short answer is 2 to 3 hours
That being said, when a death has occurred there are a number of circumstances which will influence when the cremation can actually take place. Sometimes an autopsy is scheduled, sometimes the doctor or medical examiner investigator takes longer than usual to complete the medical certificate.

Usually, we have the ashes available for release to the family within 24-48 hours after the body is released into our care.
When are we expected to pay the bill?
As you complete the forms providing us with the necessary information for the legal documentation payment options will appear.

In short, we prefer to be paid via e-transfer or credit card before services are rendered. We do have other options however. We are more than happy to discuss those options with you.
We'll never see a family go without service due to difficulty paying our fees.
Have any complaints been filed against you with the Funeral Board of Manitoba?
NO. We enjoy an excellent reputation with the Funeral Board of Manitoba, which is the governing body responsible for enforcing the Embalmer's and Funeral Director's Act of Manitoba, the Prearranged Funeral Act of Manitoba, and the Cemeteries Act of Manitoba.

We believe it is important to know who your entrusting the care of your love-one to.
